| Band Description |
Planet Joy is an experimental rock band from Pretoria. Fusing pop sensibilities with more experimental electronic textures to create a unique sonic mixture, which includes elements from industrial, ambient, electronic and alternative music. Formed in 2008 by musical cohorts Marthinus Kirsten and Stefan du Randt- they wrote 50+ songs in the same year. The music is heavily inspired by innovative 90's alternative acts like Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead and Portishead. The main function of Planet Joy's music is to evoke emotion from the listener and give them a chance to escape into another world. Thus the music is heavily produced and contain many subliminal textures and atmospheres which is not very common in South African rock music. In 2009 main songwriters Stefan and Marthinus moved to Johannesburg to live with drummer/artist Christiaan Rautenbach. Christiaan creates the comic style drawings that are an integral part of the band's image. Another friend, Kruger van Deventer joined the ranks on bass, piano and backing vocals and P l a n e t J o y was born. Currently Planet Joy is starting to play live and working on songs, concepts and art for their debut album. |
