| Band Description |
The new wave of Afrikaans Rock is about to break: more musical intelligence, more skill, more sound, more progressive song writing, more rock, and bigger rock. This move is being led by Sonsteek, a five-piece Afrikaans rock band that's been rocking the East Rand Jo'burg and Pretoria for the past year or two.
Their sound has been described in the press as "the perfect hard rock sound" and they have been specifically noted for the "compelling structures of their songs, their extraordinary musicianship and their intense presence on any number of rock stages they've graced." (Or broken)
Sonsteek is twin brothers Wynand and Dewald Venter on rhythm and bass guitars, Reyno van der Linde on impossible drums, Cornell Serfontein on lead guitar that will make your eyes water, and finally Nardi van Zijl on edgy vocals giving voice to the bands' message and musical ideas.
Their latest CD, Ons Ideale (the first cd with the full band) has just been completed and is packed with intelligent, hard rocking music. The songs vary in construction and feel, but are all cleverly put together, making the most of having two guitars and some seriously complex drumming. The vocals support and blend perfectly into the songs and the entire mix manages to blend, rather than feature bits of instrumentation. Its riffs, choruses and breaks as well as its messages stays with you and gets more interesting every time you listen to it.
Sonsteek also has a video for their song Menswees, a full HD masterpiece made by the special people at VWV, one of South Africa's proudest stories in the arena of experiential agencies. VWV spared no expense to produce a world-class music video, just to show that they can do it, using extensive CGI elements and advanced production techniques to create a dark and gritty cityscape backdrop for a hard rock band performance.
Ultimately, Sonsteek is a live band at heart and live to lift up masses of rock fans. They are the new sound in Afrikaans prog rock and show the way for all the thousands of South African rock fans who are aching for something new to come and blow them away. |
